When a customer searches "plumber near me" or "Italian restaurant" followed by their town, Google doesn't show websites first: it shows a map with three listings. Those listings are Google Business Profiles. Being in that trio means capturing customers at the exact moment they're looking. Here's how.
What is a Google Business Profile?
It's the free listing that appears on the right (on desktop) or at the top (on mobile) when someone searches for your business or your activity: name, hours, phone, reviews, photos, directions. It's often the first contact between you and a customer — even before your website. For a local business, it's the most cost-effective visibility tool there is: free, and heavily used.
How to optimise it to stand out
Having a listing isn't enough: Google ranks listings by relevance, distance and prominence. Here's what actually moves the needle.
Complete, consistent information
Name, address, phone, website, hours: everything must be filled in and identical everywhere (on the listing, your site, directories). The slightest inconsistency confuses Google. It's basic — and plenty of businesses get it wrong.
The right category
Choose the most precise primary category possible, and add the relevant secondary categories. It's one of the strongest signals for Google: a poorly chosen category, and you won't appear in the right searches.
Photos, regularly
Listings with real photos (premises, team, work) generate far more clicks and calls. Add them regularly: it's a sign of activity Google appreciates.
Customer reviews
Reviews are the #1 fuel for local ranking. Make a habit of asking happy customers for a review, and reply to every one — positive and negative. An active listing, with recent reviews and replies, builds trust with Google and with customers.
Posts and updates
Google lets you publish news, offers and events directly on the listing. Few businesses bother — which makes it an easy way to stand out and show you're active.
The mistakes that hurt your visibility
- Not claiming your listing: if you haven't verified it, you don't control it.
- Contradictory information between the listing, the site and directories.
- No reviews, or reviews left without a reply.
- Categories too vague or poorly chosen.
- A frozen listing: no photo or post for months.
