Having a website is good. But if the phone isn't ringing, your website is working against you. The good news: in most cases it isn't ten different problems — it's always the same seven. Here they are, from the most common to the most sneaky, each with the fix.
1. Your phone number is nowhere to be found
The number one mistake, by far. A visitor looking for a tradesperson wants one thing: to reach you. If your number is buried at the bottom of the contact page, you lose the people in a hurry — who happen to be the best customers. Your number and your quote button should be visible on the first screen, on every page, without scrolling.
2. Your site takes more than 3 seconds to load
More than half of mobile visitors give up on a slow site. The culprit is almost always the same: photos uploaded straight from a phone at 4 or 5 MB each. Properly compressed, they weigh ten times less with no visible difference. Google measures that speed — and ranks you accordingly.
3. It looks broken on a phone
Six to seven visits out of ten happen on mobile. If visitors have to pinch-zoom to read, if buttons are too small for a thumb, if a table spills off the screen — they leave. Test your own site on your phone, right now: it's the most profitable test of your week.
4. Your copy talks about you, not your customers
"A passionate family business since 2004, dedicated to putting our expertise at your service…" Nobody searches for that. People search for: "repairs within 48 h", "free quote within 24 h", "clean worksite, fixed price, deadline met". Every sentence on your homepage should answer a question your customer is asking — not tell your story. Your story belongs on the About page.
5. No proof for anything you claim
"Quality work, reliable team": everyone writes it, so it proves nothing. What does: photos of your real jobs (not stock images), reviews with a first name and a town, concrete numbers ("over 200 projects"). One authentic photo beats ten stock models wearing suspiciously clean hard hats.
6. A design stuck in the past
A site that looks like 2012 plants a terrible question in the visitor's mind: "is this business still running?". It's unfair — your work has nothing to do with your website — but it's instant. Visitors judge the shopfront, not the workshop. If you're unsure, our article on the signs it's time for a redesign will help you decide.
7. Invisible on Google
The sneakiest one: a nice site nobody finds. The basics that are usually missing: page titles that describe what you do (not just "Home"), copy that mentions your services and your area, a Google Business profile linked to the site, and the loading speed we covered above. Nothing magical — just foundations most sites don't have.
The 5-minute test
Grab your phone and play the customer:
- Is your number visible without scrolling?
- Does the page load in under 3 seconds on 4G?
- Can you read and tap without zooming?
- Does the first sentence talk about the customer — or about you?
- Is there at least one real photo and one real review?
Two or more "no" answers: your website is costing you customers every week — usually without you knowing, because those customers never call.
